ADK 46: Giant Mountain and Rocky Peak Ridge

As I've gotten more into hiking and mountaineering, my inner video gamer is drawn to arbitrarily defined sets of objectives. I recently read Ed Viesturs' book No Shortcuts to the Top about climbing all 14 mountains in the world with peaks more than 8,000 meters above sea level (a feat I have no plans to accomplish), …

Great conditions and a great group of @greenmountainclub hikers for Mount Garfield in New Hampshire today. Six of us did twelve miles (total) up and back in snowshoes, which was a slog - but not nearly as hard for us as it was the guy we saw doing the whole thing in tennis shoes. (It looked as if his group turned back about 100 feet below the summit. Oof. Bring appropriate gear!) #hiking #hike #newhampshire #winter #nature #adventure #snow #snowshoeing #mountains #everyoneswilderness @amcnewhampshire
Summit selfie with Lana the adventure dog on Cascade Mountain a couple weeks ago. My second winter summit of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks. Staying off the mountains this weekend though! Too much snow and temps too low. Maybe some low-elevation snowshoeing is in store... #adirondacks #adkhighpeaks #adk #adk46 #winter #hiking #solohike #summit #everyoneswilderness #latergram
That time @albervt found an invisible floor while aid climbing The Rose. Jan 5 - first Rose ascent of the year? #tbt #climbing #aidclimbing #vermont #winter #cragvt #cragvtmember #adventure #cold #everyoneswilderness
I wonder what the views are like on Cascade Mountain! It was a great hike, even with the wind and snow. The final rocky stretch to the summit was frigid; I had to shield my face from the wind with one hand, and couldn't look upwind without risking a high-speed snow crystal to the eye. It was one of those rare, paradoxical moments in the mountains - the conditions were so harsh that the only reasonable thing to do was get out of the weather, but the high winds and low visibility on the barren summit cap gave it an otherworldly feeling. I wanted to get off the mountain as fast as I could, but at the same time I wanted to stay for hours. 4/46 Adirondack High Peaks, 2/46 in winter. #hiking #winter #mountains #snow #adirondacks #adkhighpeaks #adk46 #adventure #explore #nature #newyork #everyoneswilderness
Snow, snow, and snow on the way up to Cascade and Porter Mountains today in the Adirondacks. Not pictured: The dog dragging me up the mountain and my sweet new (to me) @blackdiamond ice axe. Winter in the Adirondacks is pretty special, but come prepared! Conditions change quick, and getting caught out without the right gear is a day-ruiner - at best. #hiking #winter #snow #trees #forest #adkhighpeaks #adirondacks #adk46 #adk #everyoneswilderness #adventure #explore #mountains #travel #newyork
Starting the new year off on some real rocks! @albervt talked me into aid climbing, and it was way more fun and challenging than I expected. Putting your entire body weight on a tiny hook on a tinier ledge is a whole different kind of rush! #climbing #aidclimbing #vermont #rockclimbing #winter #cragvtmember #cragvt #everyoneswilderness #outside #cold #nofilter
